Fonda has been holding the Fire Drill Fridays all fall and is often joined by her celebrity friends, including Ted Danson, her Grace and Frankie co-stars and TV daughters, June Diane Raphael and Brooklyn Decker, Sam Waterston, Diane Lane, and more. Her own teenage granddaughter, Viva Vadim, even joined her at one protest and was arrested.
Fonda is used to spending her birthday doing activist work. For her 80th birthday in December 2017, she held a party-fundraiser for the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential (G.C.A.P.P.), which focuses on sexual health education and teen pregnancy prevention.
Fonda said then that she didn’t expect to spend her 80s doing activist work like she did in her younger years. Fonda hasn’t ever stopped this kind of work, though. This year, she temporarily moved to Washington, D.C. to focus on her climate-change protest work.
“I thought that maybe I could take up gardening, she told Vanity Fair in 2017. “I didn’t think that I would be back on the barricades, no. I didn’t think that our freedoms, our democracy would be in jeopardy the way they are now. I am utterly terrified.”
