If You Buy One Thing Today, Make it Fenty Beauty’s Flypencil Eyeliner

A self-professed eyeliner connoisseur weighs in on the latest launch.

I’m on a mission to find the world’s best eyeliner. As a self-professed eyeliner connoisseur who never leaves the house without a flick, my requirements are simple: The liner has to be super pigmented, precise, smudge-proof, user-friendly, and water-resistant, while accentuating and brightening the eye area. Nothing too crazy, right? And in my quest to find the best eyeliner on the market, I’ll admit at times I’ve been a bit gullible. One just has to take a peek in my makeup tray to see countless eyeliners that claimed to be the one, only to let me down later. But my tale doesn’t end here.

Fenty Beauty’s latest creation, an eyeliner that promised to do it all, came into my life last week. And let me tell you, I think I’ve found the one. For full transparency, I’m a liquid liner person for life, but this pencil has me rethinking everything.

Meet The Flypencil Longwear Pencil Eyeliner.

The pencil launched with a whopping 20 shades that run the gamut from matte to metallic, glitters, and bright pops of color in blues, pinks, and purples. For scientific purposes, I tested the black shade, “Cauz I’m Black,” to see if I could create the classic wing of my dreams each morning. Below, an honest review of how the Flypencil Longwear Pencil Eyeliner lived up to all my demands.

The Claim: “Flypencil’s convenient twist-up tip effortlessly glides across lids for lightweight, smudge-resistant lines with a simple flick of the wrist—no dragging, pulling, or having to retrace your steps.”

From the first swipe, I knew this pencil would be a dream. The pencil is as creamy as slathering avocado spread over toast. Within a few minutes I had zig-zag, swirls, hearts, and straight lines drawn all over the back of my hand. And it lives up to its iconic name. “Cuz I’m Black,” which is the sister to the Fenty Beauty Flyliner of the same name, provides a true inky black without having to build the formula. Lastly, when I lined my eyes I was surprised at how evenly it distributes pigment for an easy glide and application.

The Claim:

“Flypencil won’t fade or transfer until you say when.”

What better way to put your new eyeliner to the test than to workout in it? Spare me the dramatics, I know you’re not supposed to exercise in makeup, but if the Flypencil is as transfer-proof as it claims, it should be no match for a HIIT session. I walked into my workout session full of life and left with aching limbs, a sore core, and my eyeliner still intact. But once I reached home, I realized my eyeliner lacked the bold, dark luster it had when I applied it in the morning and was slightly faded in the corners of my eyes, likely due to a mix of my sweat and tears—no blood, thankfully. But after an eight-hour workday and an hour-long HIIT class, can I really be mad? 7/10

The Claim:

“Flypencil features a smart triangle shape that makes it easy to hold and control.”

Flypencil isn’t as thin as an actual pencil but isn’t as thick as a Sharpie. The corners of the triangle fit seamlessly into the gap between my thumb and index finger, which helped me to control how thick or thin I wanted my line and kept my fingers from wobbling. 10/10

Overall, Flypencil does exactly what it needs to do: Make non-believers into pencil converts for just $22. Does it make me want to break up with liquid liners for good? Not quite (that’s my issue), but if the Flypencil isn’t already the perfect eye pencil, it comes pretty damn close.
