How Meghan Markle Is Secretly Helping Her Patronage Mayhew

The Duchess of Sussex has been more hands-on with her UK patronages than she has publicly let on. Newsweek reports Meghan has been privately helping animal welfare charity Mayhew from Los Angeles. The organization is struggling with its operating costs, as per the outlet, as its income primarily comes from donations and public fundraising events. Those events have been canceled because of social distancing efforts in the UK amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A source “in the Sussex camp” told Newsweek that “the Duchess is in touch and working with Mayhew at this time. One thing many people may not realize is the range of work Mayhew does. It is not your classic animal charity. They are supporting so many other people in the community too.”

The Duchess’ work with her other patronage SmartWorks was recently made public too. Meghan did a video call with a SmartWorks client, a young woman about to interview for an internship, to encourage her ahead of it.

“I think you’re going to be fantastic. It’s just so exciting,” Meghan said.

“I just wanted to be able to call in and tell you best of luck and my fingers are crossed for you,” the Duchess continued. “There’s so much going on in the world right now and just to be such a beacon of hope and focusing on getting through it and all the positivity that we just want to send your way to make sure you can get on the other side of this too and have such a great opportunity there.”

SmartWorks has been operating a virtual clinic during the COVID-19 crisis. Meghan praised their work, saying, “It’s been such an honor to meet and learn from so many talented women in the Smart Works network over the years, and recently to see the amazing work they’re doing to adapt their programs to the reality of this pandemic. Their ability to continue to empower women and help them harness the confidence they need to succeed during this time is inspiring.”
