How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Marked Archie’s 2nd Birthday

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have purposely avoided sharing photos of their newly-two-year-old son Archie, choosing instead to give him as much privacy as possible given his royal family member status. While at first it seemed like the couple was continuing that practice today, the two released a new photo of their little boy on their Archewell site in the afternoon:

They also asked for something far greater in his honor. The couple called on those inclined to donate to help the world achieve COVID vaccine equity. Meghan and Harry are co-chairs for the upcoming Global Citizen Vax Live concert that airs this weekend, so this is a continuation of their work for the cause.

The couple wrote on their non-profit’s site:

We have been deeply touched over the past two years to feel the warmth and support for our family in honor of Archie’s birthday. Many of you donate to charities on his behalf, and mark the occasion by giving back or doing an act of service—all through the goodness of your hearts. You raise funds for those who need it most, and continue to do so organically and selflessly. We remain incredibly grateful. This year, our world continues to be on the path to recovery from COVID-19. Yet too many families are still struggling with the impact of this pandemic. While some places are on the verge of healing, in so many parts of the world, communities continue to suffer. As of today, around 80 percent of the nearly one billion COVID-19 vaccine shots that have been given were administered in wealthier countries. While we may feel that normalcy is around the corner, we remind ourselves that in much of the world, and especially in developing countries, vaccine distribution has effectively yet to start. We will not be able to truly recover until everyone, everywhere, has equal access to the vaccine. And with that intention, we are inviting you to contribute whatever you can—if you have the means to do so—to bring vaccines to families in the world’s most vulnerable places. For a donation of just $5, you can cover the cost of a dose for someone in need. And because we were able to secure matching support from a number of organizations, that $5 you give will automatically turn into $20—covering the cost of four doses. Every single dollar counts—not only will it help save lives but it will help save families and communities. We cannot think of a more resonant way to honor our son’s birthday. If we all show up, with compassion for those we both know and don’t know, we can have a profound impact. Even a small contribution can have a ripple effect.Together, we can uplift, protect, and care for one another.

Last year, the couple shared a video of Meghan reading to Archie for his first birthday on Save the Children UK’s Instagram. That video has become the most in-depth look the public has had of little Archie in the last year:

The couple also released a holiday card on the Mayhew’s Instagram (Meghan and Harry have no public social media accounts of their own currently), featuring an illustration of them with Archie.

Meghan and Harry spoke a little about what Archie is like now in their Oprah interview that aired this March. He’s talking and has quite the vocabulary.

“This year has been crazy for everybody,” Harry started. “But to have outdoor space where I can go for walks with Archie and we can go for walks as a family and with the dogs or have a hike or go down to the beach, which is so close, all of these things…”

He continued: “The highlight for me is sticking him on the back of the bicycle in his little baby seat and taking him on these bike rides, which is something I was never able to do when I was young. I can see him on the back and he’s got his arms out and he’s going ‘Woooo!’ Chatting, chatting, chatting, and he’s going, ‘Palm tree! house!’ and all this stuff.”

Meghan added that Archie’s favorite word then was hydrate. “But also, any time anyone leaves the house, he’s like ‘Drive safe!’” Harry added.

Meghan laughed, “‘Drive safe!’ He’s not even two yet.”

This post has been updated to include Meghan and Harry’s newly-released photo of Archie.
