The Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated their son Archie’s first birthday privately in Los Angeles yesterday. While the couple opted not to personally give details about the festivities, a source told People a bit about how Meghan and Harry made Archie’s day special as the family quarantines in California. There was cake, naturally.
Archie had a “smash cake”—a cake made for just one (typically babies on their first birthday), where no fork is needed, the source said.
“They are celebrating as a family focused on Archie and being together,” the source explained. “They’ll have a smash cake and Zooms with family and friends. It’s been beautiful weather, so perhaps a family stroll with the dogs.”
E! reported previously that Archie adores FaceTiming with other kids and babies. Meghan and Harry’s son has been “loving doing FaceTime playdates with other small children they have in their lives,” a source told E! last month.
The Duke and Duchess shared a video of Meghan reading to Archie yesterday to mark their son’s big day. Save the Children UK posted the footage on its Instagram in support of the Save With Stories initiative during COVID-19. Save With Stories benefits both Save the Children and No Kid Hungry.
Meghan and Harry’s friends shared with ELLE.com that the couple are enjoying a “happy and love-filled time” with their son as they quarantine and continue to work on plans for their new non-profit Archewell. The two wanted to drive attention to the two charities yesterday because the organizations are “committed to meeting children’s most urgent needs during the global pandemic,” a spokesperson for the couple said. They provide books, educational materials, and meals to families in need.
