Sources have spoken here and there to tabloids about how far back Hailey and Justin Bieber’s dating history actually goes. But allow Hailey herself to set the record straight about how she and Justin were friends, dated when she was still a teen, broke up, got back together years later, got engaged a month after rekindling, and then married two months after that. While it all may seem like a whirlwind to outsiders, a lot of history and love fueled their relationship’s momentum. Hailey recounted everything she felt in her ELLE interview.
Hailey explained why things failed after the two first officially dated in 2016. “There was a time when our lives seemed to be going in very different directions,” she said. “I actually think—now that I look back at it being married—that it was a good thing for the two of us, very healthy.”
They started talking a few years later and reunited formally in June 2019: “We ended up being at this church conference together in Miami, and it was the first time we’d seen each other in a while,” she continued. “I remember we were hanging out and I was like, ‘Listen, I’m really, really happy for us to be friends again. I want us to always be cool and be friends.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, here’s the thing: We’re not going to be friends.’ And I was like, ‘Oh. Is that so?’ I think we were both a little unsure about what was going on in the very beginning. It was familiar territory, but when a lot of time goes by, it’s like getting to know a new person.”
The Justin she was with then, “he had grown up so much,” Hailey said. “I was actually shocked. I think I had grown up a lot, too. He was somebody I’d always cared about so deeply and loved very deeply. Obviously, it took work and getting past things between the two of us, but it was all very worth it. He’s an incredible, amazing man and such a good partner to go through life with. There is no one else I would have ever wanted to spend my life with except him. So, I’m lucky.”
Hailey also said she and Justin waited until they were married to move in together. “Neither of us believed in doing that, but to each their own. If you live with a boyfriend or a fiancé or whatever it is, that’s cool.”
She also is aware most people her age, 23, aren’t married yet. “I don’t judge what anyone my age or any of my friends are going through, because it’s normal,” she said. “They should be still figuring out who they want to be with.”
Hailey does enjoy having other people be the third wheel now though, although she acknowledged her friends do give her a hard time about how cutesy she and Justin are publicly with each other. “Oh my gosh. It’s endless. We’ll get on the phone with each other and be all cute and annoying, doing baby talk, and my friends will be in my ear like, ‘Uhh, I literally want to puke. I hate you guys.’ ” Hailey laughed. “I was the third wheel for quite some time with a lot of my friends, so I don’t feel bad.”
