Beyoncé Calls for Justice After George Floyd’s Murder

On Friday night, Beyoncé posted a video in which she expressed her thoughts and feelings following the death of 46-year-old George Floyd after a Minneapolis police officer named Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck for more than eight minutes.

Beyoncé added a link in her Instagram bio for her followers to sign petitions to seek justice for the Minneapolis man’s death.

“We need justice for George Floyd,” she began. “We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken, and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain. I’m not only speaking to people of color. If you’re white, black, brown, or anything in between, I’m sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killings of human beings. No more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away. George is all of our family in humanity. He’s our family because he’s a fellow American. There have been too many times that we’ve seen these violent killings and no consequences. Yes, someone’s been charged, but justice is far from being achieved. Please sign the petition and continue to pray for peace, compassion, and healing for our country. Thank you so much.”

Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday and is now in custody. The three other cops who were at the scene with Chauvin were fired along with him, but they have not yet been charged.

“It’s an absolute outrage because it isn’t just one officer who is responsible for the murder of George Floyd,”Ayaan Dahir, a Minneapolis resident and activist told Al Jazeera Friday. “They all need to be arrested and charged.”
