Are Emilia Clarke and Matt Smith Dating? – Twitter Reacts to Dinner Sighting

Lily James and Chris Evans may not be the only surprise couple to emerge from 2020. James’ ex-boyfriend, The Crown star Matt Smith, was photographed out with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke in Soho, London. The two grabbed dinner, with Clarke dressed in white wide-legged pants and a black blazer. Smith complemented her in a gray bomber jacket, white top, and dark denim. You can see the photos on Daily Mail and JustJared.

It’s unclear at this point whether it was a date or just two friends catching up. Clarke and Smith worked together before on the 2015 film Terminator Genisys. But the shots of the two together was enough to send Twitter spiraling. “I wanted Emilia Clarke and Chris Evans, I got Emilia Clarke with Matt Smith and Lily James with Chris Evans, well played 2020,” one user quipped.

“DAENERYS + THE DOCTOR If they’re really together I’m gonna die And what’s the ship name?” another wrote, referencing Smith’s role as the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who.

Other fans expressed excitement at the prospect of Clarke and Smith dating:

James and Smith dated for five years before their split was reported in December. Reports of James and Evans dating first came out in July, when they were photographed together multiple times in London.

Clarke was last romantically linked to Charlie McDowell in 2018. That relationship quietly ended, with fans speculating the two may have broken up around February 2019. In August 2019, McDowell and his new girlfriend Lily Collins confirmed their relationship.

Clarke has generally kept her love life private. But the actress spoke to Harper’s Bazaar for its December 2017 issue about the struggle she had dating while playing Daenerys on Game of Thrones, in part because she was coping with sudden A-list fame.

“I think in the early days I second-guessed everyone,” Clarke started. “I mean, I do that in life anyway, but especially with fame and becoming successful, and strangers knowing you more than your circle of friends, I would worry about what people thought of me. Then you get to a point where you’re like, ‘You know what? I’m okay.’”

She added that she didn’t just believe in “one” Prince Charming-esque soulmate anymore: “You’d love to, though, right? You’d love to believe there is just one. There is ‘the one’ for particular parts of your life—you change as you get older. So when I was in my teens, there was ‘the one’ for my teens, for sure, and then, you know, there’s ‘the one’ for the next time of your life. There’s this Buddhist philosophy that says you can only really understand yourself through your interactions with other people.”
