Looks that will keep you looking and feeling fresh.
It’s getting warmer, ya’ll! And as each day creeps higher and higher in temperature, we get a teeny bit closer to summer. Summer makeup is a chance to experiment with more glow, brighter liners, and blushy cheeks that make a statement. But you’ve also got to deal with sweat. It can seem hard to find the perfect balance between the ultimate face beat and the 105-degree weather outside but don’t sweat it. Instead, turn to the experts, aka the celebrity makeup artists who know a thing or two about making a good look last. “I’m definitely used to doing longwear sweat-proof makeup that still looks like skin,” says makeup artist Mollie Gloss, who’s kept Clairo and Ravyn Lenae performance-ready on tour. Below, we caught up with six makeup artists behind your favorite on-stage looks that are dewy, not oily. Here are the best tips from the people behind your favorite stars.

Glow That Lasts
“Layering is the key to ensure your makeup is sweat-proof and long-lasting. Keep the layers thin and use different textures—powder on powder will look thick and pageant-y, but powder on top of cream will look glowy. When the creamy products dry down they sit close to your skin, and powder seals the deal while soaking up excess sweat and oil.
My current go-to liquid foundation is Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation, which is long-lasting and lightweight, and I set it with powdered bronzer. But you can—and should!—use this method for every part of your routine: if you apply a cream blush, set it with powder blush; set liquid eyeliner, with shadow. Every part of the face gets a double application. If you build it, it will stick.”—Sir John
Sweat-Free Summer
“When your makeup needs to last through a hot day, priming and setting is essential. I love the Urban Decay All Nighter Primer, because it goes on smooth, feels lightweight on skin, and is never sticky. Then, after you’ve applied a sheer layer of foundation or even tinted moisturizer, lock it with a loose setting powder. I like to use the Kevyn Aucoin translucent powder on a Beautyblender or a puff, really pressing the product in for a velvety finish.
Then, I double-set with the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, just to be safe. If you need to absorb sweat throughout the day, I love using their All Nighter Waterproof Setting Powder for touch- ups because it doesn’t add more coverage. It absorbs sweat and excess oil without adding more coverage. It’s a must-have for those warm summer nights.”—Alexx Mayo
The Minimalist
“Summer make-up should be about using minimal products with maximum results. A great everyday foundation is It Cosmetics CC cream—it’s hydrating, lasts all day, and you can really manipulate the coverage depending how you apply it. A fluffy brush gives you a natural, light finish, while a Beautyblender or traditional foundation brush is best for areas you want fuller coverage. Plus, it has SPF 50 built in. I’ve used this on performers at sweaty festivals and it’s never let me down. My favorite powder is Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder, which mattifies without looking heavy or cakey and still allows your natural glow to shine through. If you get oily throughout the day, don’t reapply powder as—it can stick to the oil and look heavy. Instead, use Shiseido Oil Control Blotting Papers and reassess. Then, if you still feel like you need powder, you can reapply without worry. Finally, I couldn’t live without Tom Ford’s Emotionproof cream shadow. I use it in most of my makeup looks, but you really see its magic in the summer. It’s great on its own or as a base for powder eyeshadows, and either way, it does not budge.” —Francesca Brazzo
Skin That Looks Like Skin
“I like to use products that keep the skin looking like skin, and then keep the whole Urban Decay All Nighter suite (face primer, setting powder, and setting spray) on hand to make sure it lasts. I start off by prepping with Weleda Skin Food, which is an important step to help your makeup stay all day and keep your skin looking dewy and healthy. I apply primer to help my favorite Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation stay in place, and then go in with the Kosas Super Creamy Brightening Concealer.
It works great on every skin type and has an incredible skin-finish. To lock everything in place I use the setting powder all over, and then finish it off with setting spray. The combination helps control oil throughout the day and helps your makeup last all night.”—Allan Avendaño
An Airbrushed Finish
“I’m often doing makeup that needs to stay put through heat, sweat, and lights—whether it’s a summer festival or an arena tour, I need to use products that look fresh but stay put. You’d normally think complexion makeup can’t have it both ways, but with the handheld Temptu Pro, I’m all set. Airbrush makeup is so much more sweat and oil-proof than traditional makeup. The professional S/B formula is silicone-based and has a really nice, dewy finish, but if you don’t want (or need!) to custom-mix your shades, they also have pods that are filled and ready to go. In that case, the Silksphere foundation is probably your best bet. And if I don’t want heavy coverage, I spot conceal like normal and finish with a light coat of the airbrush to seal everything in. The nice thing about the newer airbrush machines is that they’re so compact—airbrush makeup is actually a thing you can do at home without it being too much of an ordeal. It is really a game-changer.”—Mollie Gloss
Baked and Bronzed
“The key to long-wearing makeup is all about how you prep your skin—less is more. I would recommend staying away from face oils and instead go for an oil-free moisturizer like the Pore Control Mattifier from Murad. I like to apply Dior Forever Skin foundation and concealer, but a more lightweight option that still lasts is Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation. To lock everything in, take a damp Beautyblender and lightly bake with translucent powder everywhere you might get oily: under the cheekbones, on the sides of the nose, on the forehead, and under the eyes. This kind of makeup still looks flawless by the end of the day. To tie in the whole look, I’d go for a bronze-y, monochromatic look on the eyes, lips, and cheeks. The Buxom Wanderlust primer-infused blush wears well for 14-hours, and you can also put it on your eyes. A matching lip cream keeps the look cohesive. Finally, a thick layer of Buxom’s Xtrovert mascara adds some drama and will hold up just as well as your complexion.” —Ash K. Holm
