Kate Middleton brought along a tribute to her late mother-in-law with her to Prince Philip’s funeral. Along with her fitted Roland Mouret black coat dress and fascinator hat with a veil, she paired a four-strand pearl necklace from Queen Elizabeth’s personal collection that was once loaned to Princess Diana.
Here is the Queen wearing the necklace at a banquet in Bangladesh in 1983. Diana wore the necklace at a state dinner in November 1982, per The Court Jeweller.
The necklace, originally a gift from the Japanese government, was made by Garrard, according to The Court Jeweller. As Harper’s Bazaar pointed out, Kate wore the choker to the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary celebration in 2017.
Kate wore dangling pearl earrings to match the choker; the earrings were a subtle tribute to her husband’s grandparents’ love story: Per The Court Jeweller, they were a wedding gift to the Queen from Hakim of Bahrain in 1947.
The choker is hardly the first piece of Diana’s jewelry—or jewelry that was loaned to Diana—that Kate has worn to special occasions. She inherited and has worn several pieces, including the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which was loaned to Diana from the Queen’s collection and was a favorite of hers. Kate wore it in 2015, marking the first time it had been worn since Diana’s death.
Her engagement ring, of course, is the most significant of Diana’s jewelry that now belongs to Kate. In its fourth season, The Crown delved into the history of the famous sapphire ring (however embellished).
Kate rode with Prince William to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, but she did not walk with her husband, because he was part of the procession, alongside his father, brother, and uncles.
“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation,” Prince William wrote, in part, of his grandfather last week. “Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”
