The Queen and Palace Responds to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Oprah Interview

The Queen and Buckingham Palace have finally responded to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Oprah interview, where the couple spoke candidly about their experiences in the institution.

Among the bombshell claims was that a member of the royal family (not the Queen or Prince Philip) had concerns that Archie’s skin would be too dark, the Firm refusing Archie security, Meghan revealing that the institution refused to let her seek treatment when she struggled with suicidal ideation, and Harry’s statement that the family has an “invisible contract” with the British tabloids and are scared of them. There was much more said about the institution’s racism, lack of regard for mental health, and inaction, and you can see a comprehensive rundown of the conversation here.

The Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen, which was brief. It said:

The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Meghan and Harry. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much loved family members.

Meghan and Harry spoke warmly of the Queen in their interview with Oprah. “I’ve spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have [in] many, many years,” Harry said. “My grandmother and I have a really good relationship and understanding, and I have deep respect for her.”
