On Friday, Chadwick Boseman’s family announced via his Twitter account that the 43-year-old actor had died after a four-year battle with colon cancer. “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family wrote. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side.”

In a resurfaced clip from 2018, Boseman speaks about how much Black Panther meant to two boys he met, Ian and Taylor, who later died of cancer. “Throughout our filming, I was communicating with them, knowing that they were both terminal” Boseman shared during an interview with SiriusXM. “What they said to me, and their parents said that they were trying to hold on ’til this movie comes. And to a certain degree, you hear them say that, and you’re like, ‘I gotta get up and go to the gym, or I gotta go to work. I gotta learn these lines, I gotta work on this accent. seeing how devoted all of my cast mates are and knowing that that will mean so much to them. You’re like, ‘This can’t mean that much to them. But seeing how the world has taken us on, seeing how the movement is, how it’s taken on a life of its own, I realized they anticipated something great…It put me back in the mind of being a kid, just to experience those two little boys; anticipation of this movie. And when I found out that they, he said, breaking down in tears, as his co-stars Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira placed their hands on him. “Yeah, it means a lot.”
