Jada Pinkett Smith took to her red table on Friday to sit down with husband Will Smith and finally address recent rumors regarding an affair with musician August Alsina.
During the episode of the Facebook Watch talk show Red Table Talk—which Pinkett Smith teased on Twitter last week but didn’t announce an air date for—the actress admitted to having a relationship with Alsina, but went on to clarify that it took place during a period of separation between her and her husband. Pinkett Smith also explained that her relationship with Alsina initially started off platonically, but later blossomed into a stronger relationship at a time where she did not think she would be reuniting with her husband.
“It was about four and half, four years ago that I started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends. And it all started with him just needing some help. Me wanting to help his health, his mental state. From there you and I were going through a difficult time. We basically…we broke up,” the actress said to her husband who was sitting across the table from her.

Pinkett Smith then acknowledged a romantic “entanglement” with the musician, but clarified misleading headlines that insinuated her husband granted her “permission” to engage in the relationship.
“One thing I want clean up that was swirling about in the press is about you giving permission…the only person that can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself,” declared Pinkett Smith during the conversation. “But what August was probably trying to communicate—because I could actually see how he could have perceived it as permission because we were separated amicably—and I also think he wanted to make it clear he was not a home wrecker, which he’s not.”
The Girls Trip star continued, stating that she needed time to work on herself and her personal happiness to eventually come to the decision to return and continue work on her marriage with Smith. She also stated that she and Alsina haven’t been in communication with each other since her reconciling with her husband.
“Through that particular journey I learned so much about myself and was able to really confront a lot of emotional immaturity, emotional insecurity, and I was really able to do some really deep healing,” added Pinkett Smith.
