Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas went out this weekend to support the Black Lives Matter movement, participating in a Los Angeles protest. The couple shared photos on their Instagrams of the protest—and Turner kept her comments enabled. She responded to some, including one by a commenter asking why she was still protesting after the four officers involved in George Floyd’s death were charged.

Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer pinned him to the ground and pressed his knee into his neck for nearly nine minutes while Floyd pleaded for help and repeatedly said he could not breathe. His death was filmed, and the outrage over the video and other Black lives senselessly lost to police brutality sparked global protests. On June 3, the officer that pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, had his charges increased to second-degree murder and manslaughter. The three other officers involved (two assisted in restraining Floyd, and one watched nearby) were also recently each arrested and charged with aiding and abetting Chauvin in connection to Floyd’s death. You can learn more about what happened here.
In a since-deleted comment, the user wrote to Turner, “I mean they’ve been arrested and charge [sic] with murder so there [is] justice soooooo can we have peace now?”
Turner wrote back, “This isn’t just about those 4 cops, this is about Breonna Taylor, this is about Trayvon Martin, this is about Eric Garner, this is about the systemic racism that black people have faced for hundreds and hundreds of years. This is about changing the system. Justice will be done when society reflects our beliefs that we are all equal. Until then, there should be no peace.”
