Betty White Says She’s ‘Blessed with Incredibly Good Health’

Betty White is an American treasure. She’s been in show business since she appeared on her first show, Life with Elizabeth in the early 1950s. She was our Sue Ann Nivens on Mary Tyler Moore, our Rose Nylund on Golden Girls, and she seriously increased the quality of Hot in Cleveland just by being in it. So, it’s very normal for us to want to check in on Betty White as much as we would a beloved grandparent during the coronavirus pandemic.

In case you have been wondering if the people in White’s life have wrapped her in a protective bubble and kept her from stepping outside, here’s the update you need: She’s OK. The 98-year-old told Closer Weekly in an email that she’s staying safe: “I’m blessed with incredibly good health,” she wrote.

Entertainer Tom Sullivan, a friend of White’s, told Closer that the actress has her methods for keeping busy in quarantine.

“She reads the L.A. Times cover to cover,” he said. “She owns literally thousands of crossword puzzle books and is constantly doing them to keep her mind jumping. This is really serious with her.”

A close friend added that White knows how to treat herself while she’s in self-isolation. She eats her favorite snack, a hotdog and french fries, while sipping on a vodka martini. She occasionally makes a grilled cheese and a can of tomato soup—the ultimate comfort food.

It turns out that White really only sips on the vodka martini. The unnamed friend told Closer: “Betty loves to joke that vodka keeps her young. She loves the image of her sitting at home in a rocking chair, drinking a martini and watching game shows, but she’s not really a big drinker. That’s not her. She’ll only take a few sips of a cocktail if the occasion calls for it.”

And, never fear, she also has strict rules while she quarantines.

“No one permitted in except those who must. Has helpers who are great with her,” a representative for White told the TODAY Show. Her rep added that “Betty has [a] beautiful backyard with a number of wild animals visiting. Two ducks always come by to say hello. They waddle up to her glass door and look in.”

And while she sits at home, eating her hot dog and fries and sipping on her martini, White has some pretty solid advice for the rest of us, per her friend.

“Betty’s message to the world is to slow down and enjoy what you have: family, friends, your pets,” the friend said. “She says that the pandemic is serious, but we have come through worse. It’s Mother Nature’s way of telling us all to slow down.”

Sage advice from the First Lady of Television. Now, wear your mask and keep her safe!
