We can thank All My Children for the long-lasting relationship between Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. Ripa and Consuelos, both 49, met on the set of the soap opera when he was cast as her character’s love interest. The Live With Kelly and Ryan host and Riverdale actor celebrated 24 years of marriage this month while sheltering at home with their three children, Michael, 22; Lola, 18; and Joaquin, 17. Relive their decades-long romance, from their spontaneous Las Vegas wedding in 1996 to today.
February 1995
It all started with an audition. When the producers of All My Children were looking to cast the future husband of Ripa’s character Hayley Vaughan, they considered Consuelos. “I auditioned him,” Ripa recalled in an August 2018 interview on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy. “They’d been looking for this character for some time…They didn’t want a dark-haired guy, they wanted a Latino actor. So I had auditioned every Latino actor in the city and around the city and then California.”

Then one day, Ripa remembered, the show’s casting director showed Ripa a photo of Consuelos. “At that point, I was not a hopeless romantic. I never thought about getting married, it never occurred to me that I would grow old with someone,” Ripa said during the radio interview. ‘When I saw him, the photograph of him, I saw my entire future with him flash [my eyes]. Like, I saw it. I [didn’t] believe in any of that and now I do because of that moment.” Consuelos was officially cast as Mateo Santos alongside Ripa, roles they would both play until 2001, appearing in a few 2010 episodes, too.
As for Consuelos, he told E! in 2006, “My main focus was getting the job and I couldn’t believe my luck, having been in New York for five minutes. My first impression of my wife was—she was obviously extremely beautiful—but she was really funny, really intelligent, really quick. I realized that if I was ever to get into an argument with her, I would lose every single time.”
February 1996
The co-stars quietly began dating soon after, making their public debut as a couple at the Soap Opera Digest Awards on Valentine’s Day.
May 1996
Consuelos proposed to Ripa after a walk in the park with pizza and wine at his apartment. The couple recalled the evening on an episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan in celebration of their 20th wedding anniversary. “I said, ‘Ask me when you’re serious,'” Ripa remembered. ‘And he said, ‘I am serious. Let’s go to Vegas tomorrow and get married.'”
They eloped in a Las Vegas chapel they found in the phone book on May 1, 1996, according to E! News. Ripa wore a $199 dress she’s bought on clearance from Barney’s. “I didn’t buy it as a wedding dress. I just bought it because it was really pretty, and I wanted to buy something from the Barney’s Warehouse sale,” she told her morning show audience in 2016 after she re-wore the dress on a 20th anniversary trip, via Us Weekly. Their wedding was reportedly followed by a week-long honeymoon in Rome and Capri.
In 2013, Ripa shared a photo from her wedding day on Twitter:

June 1997
About a year later, the newlyweds welcomed their first son, Michael Consuelos on June 2, 1997. The 22-year-old is set to graduate this year with a film degree from NYU. In 2018, he played a younger version of his father’s Riverdale character. On a recent episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan, Ripa said that her son has been helping her produce at-home segments of the show during quarantine.
For Michael’s last birthday, Ripa shared a video of her first-born to Instagram with the caption, “Happy 22 to our #[email protected]’ve led the way…We love you. So proud of you,” Mark captioned two throwback pictures at the time. Ripa added: “Happy Birthday @michaelconsway ♥️ talented, handsome, smart, kind, and 22. You started this whole thing!”

June 2000
The couple’s onscreen counterparts wouldn’t tie the knot until June 16, 2000, four years after Ripa and Consuelos’ Elvis-officiated ceremony.
November 2000
On November 1, Ripa was invited to tryout for the co-hosting seat alongside Regis Philbin, following the departure of longtime anchor Kathie Lee Gifford. As the Washington Post recounts, Ripa’s unannounced pregnancy played a role in earning her the gig. During the tryout episode, Los Angeles psychic Char Margolis was a guest. The psychic talked to Ripa about her late grandmother, saying, “She’s going to watch over you when this new baby comes.”
After Ripa got a shocked look on her face, she nervously laughed and said, “I haven’t told my boss yet!” She officially joined the morning talk show in February 2001. During the Live With Regis and Kelly 10th anniversary special in 2010, Margolis returned to the show to commemorate the on-air pregnancy reveal. “Char, of course, is the reason that I got my job here, I’m convinced,” Ripa said. “I really am convinced that you’re the reason I wound up getting this job.”

June 2001
About seven months after Ripa disclosed her pregnancy publicly, she and Consuelos welcomed their daughter, Lola Consuelos on June 16, 2001. She’s now 18 and a student at NYU.

In February, Ripa shared a throwback photo from the time of Consuelos with both Michael and Lola. “#fbf June 2001. Going from one to two seemed like a big deal at the time, but @instasuelos has always been a multitasker #daddy #toddler #newborn 💪🏽♥️♥️ ,” she wrote on Instagram.

Then came the couple’s third child, a son named Joaquin Consuelos, born on February 25, 2003. The 17-year-old is currently a high school student in New York City.

When the spouses co-host episodes of Ripa’s morning talk show, they often open up about their family life. In June 2019, the couple infamously shared that their daughter Lola had walked in on her parents sharing some romantic time together on her 18th birthday. “Thanks for ruining my birthday. And thanks for ruining my life,” Ripa recalled Lola telling them. “I used to see in color, and now everything is gray!”
2005-2007
As the couple celebrated 10 years of marriage, they began working together more than ever before. During this time, Consuelos appeared on 10 episodes across seasons 2 and 3 of Ripa’s ABC sitcom, Hope & Faith. They also founded the New York-based production company Milojo, an ode to the names of their three children, in 2007.
In a 2015 interview with E!, Consuelos talked about working well with his wife of nearly 20 years. “It’s funny, we were talking about it last night with our kids. You know, we’ve been working together since ’94, so almost 21 years in close capacity, and I think at the end of the day we really, really get each other,” he explained to the outlet.
2011
In 2011, the family of five went on a trip to France, a throwback moment Ripa shared on Instagram in June 2019, upon their return to the country.

October 2015
Consuelos and their three children supported Ripa when she got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “It all began with All My Children,” Ripa said in an emotional speech at the event. “All My Children is where I met the man that I’ve been married to for almost 20 years, the love of my life, the man who taught me how to be a person—really, a real person—and we have three of the most beautiful children, that I’m so proud of, on the planet.”
Ripa spoke to AOL.com the same year about maintaining a healthy relationship after almost two decades of marriage. “There’s going to be times where you look at each other like ‘I can’t believe I live with you,'” she admitted, “but open communication and strong listening skills can help carry you through hard times. That’s what you want in life, to have a good companion, somebody that loves you, that listens to you and is your equal in every way.”
May 2016
After Michael Strahan exited his post at Live With Kelly for a hosting position at Good Morning America, Ripa co-hosted the show with several potential replacements. Consuelos was a frequent co-host, appearing on the show 13 times in the period between Strahan’s exit and Ryan Seacrest’s entry. Consuelos was one of many names being floated as the permanent co-host alongside his wife, as well as Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, and Jerry O’Connell. Ryan Seacrest was named the permanent co-host in May 2017.
November 2018
Although Consuelos didn’t join his wife’s morning talk show full-time, the pair did work together again on his series, Riverdale.”It’s a family affair……..Hiram’s mistress. 23 years of auditioning for a role i was born to play. Coming soon to the @thecwriverdale,” Ripa wrote on Instagram, teasing a first look at her character.

January 2019
Ripa’s episode of Riverdale premiered on January 30. Consuelos spoke to Us Weekly at the time about how his wife nabbed the role. “[Riverdale creator] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] called me and said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a question to ask you. Do you think she’d want to do it?’ And I said, ‘You know, yeah. Give her a call!’ They spoke and they figured it out,” Consuelos told the outlet. “Roberto’s awesome, man. No one knows this world better than him. He just made it happen. I definitely did not ask for him to do that. I think he thought it would be so much fun.”

October 2019
Later in the year, the husband and wife paid tribute to one another in separate doting Instagram tributes. For Ripa’s 49th birthday, Consuelos shared several photos of his wife and theorized about what life would look like if he had never met her.
“Happy Birthday to my Fave..I’m really glad you were born.. Because let’s face it, if you weren’t, I would’ve been married 3 or 4 times by now,” he wrote. “Which would’ve been really expensive, not to mention the super tense parent teacher conferences and all the awkward blended family holiday/vacations. Anyway, happy birthday sweetie.”

That same month, Ripa shared a shirtless photo of Consuelos and plugged an episode of Riverdale. “This is your thirst trappy reminder to watch an all NUDE #riverdale TONIGHT on @thecwriverdale 8/7 central. Did i say nude? I meant new 🔥💦,” she captioned the photo.

April 2020
The couple gave a candid update on their quarantine sex life during a recent call on Radio Andy’s Quarantined With Bruce. Consuelos and Ripa admitted that being isolated with their kids put a strain on their intimate time, but romantically reflected on their relationship.
“We found each other at the right time in our lives, we were really young,” Ripa said. “We learned each other well. And with that comes a certain level of comfort and confidence and experimentation. We have fun. We enjoy [each other].” Consuelos added, “You check off all the boxes for me.”
May 2020
This month, the couple celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary. They joked about the milestone during a virtual episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “I thought it was 26 [years]; she thought it was 23,” Consuelos said, adding, “It takes the pressure off having to get a present.”

Naturally, the couple took their celebrations to social media. Consuelos shared a close-up photo of he and Ripa’s arms embracing each other to Instagram. “Making a life, sharing a history, holding you close for 24 years. I love you @kellyripa,” he captioned the post.
