When Billie Eilish swept the 2020 Grammys, taking home awards for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album, it was easy to forget the pop star had just turned 18 a month prior.
But on Sunday night, as Eilish walked the red carpet at the 2020 Academy Awards, viewers were made painfully aware of the singer’s teen status. She said—with a straight face—that one of her favorite movies growing up was The Babadook, which *checks notes that I have stored on a floppy disk* was released in 2014.
Billie Eilish just said that a favorite movie from her youth was THE BABADOOK and so I am watching the red carpet from my crypt.

I was a WHOLE ASS PERSON when The Babadook came out, and Billie Eilish is out her in public saying she was watching it while “growing up.” pic.twitter.com/f1GO2lxVXA

Billie Eilish just said her favorite childhood movie was Babadook and The Social Network. And I have never felt so old. pic.twitter.com/DicJ3jbt9F

“u know Billie eilish is a baby when she says ‘babadook’ was her favorite movie growing up,” one ELLE.com editor wrote in our Oscar’s Slack chat, before declaring: “I’m 100 years old”
Eilish has previously made it clear that she is a fetus (she went on Jimmy Kimmel Live and revealed she didn’t know what a Cabbage Patch Kid is), but if her words on Sunday also sent you into an existential crisis then 1) I am sorry and 2) The following list will not help.
Hereby presenting, a smattering of things that are in fact older than Billie Eilish, who was born in December 2001:
the iPod (released in October 2001)Britney Spears’ first album …Baby One More Time (released in January 1999)the first Harry Potter book (released in June 1997)Netflix (launched in August 1997)the Razor scooter (released in 2000)Barack Obama’s first book Dreams from My Father (released in July 1995)SpongeBob SquarePants (premiered in May 1999) the Mario Party video game (released in 1998)Neopets (released in November 1999)the film Bring It On (released in August 2000)the BlackBerry (released in January 1999)
The list could go on and on, but I think you get the message, and that message is: You’re old. Hope you’ve started on that retirement account!
Billie Eilish was a perfect choice for the in memoriam bc remembering how old she is always makes me feel close to death
