Kate Middleton dusted off an old custom Alexander McQueen gown for the 2020 BAFTAs on Sunday night in London. While Middleton is no stranger to re-wearing pieces from her closet, all attendees were encouraged to re-wear their gowns or suits in an effort to make the red carpet more sustainable.
“The most sustainable garment is the one we already own,” Orsola de Castro, co-founder of Fashion Revolution and fashion activist, said in guide given to guests created by the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability. The guide also suggested wearing vintage or or renting their clothing, offering a list of companies they could use to do so.
Middleton previously wore the Alexander McQueen gown in 2012 for a dinner in Malaysia. She paired the gown with jewels by Van Cleef and Arpels along with a pair of gold Jimmy Choo heels.
This year was the first in the BAFTAs first-ever carbon neutral ceremony.
“Sustainability is very important to BAFTA, and we’re doing more than ever before,” the academy said in a press statement before the event. “The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment.”
The academy also said that the red carpet itself is 100 percent recyclable and the dinner came from sustainable produce. They also offered tips on how attendees could offset their travel’s environmental impact.
