Justin Bieber did his first sit-down interview of the year with Ellen DeGeneres yesterday, and it wasn’t without one profoundly awkward moment. DeGeneres asked Bieber about what his single “Yummy” is about. “What were you thinking of when you wrote that ‘yummy, yummy,'” DeGeneres asked.
“My sex life,” Bieber replied with a nod.
“Okay,” DeGeneres said, nodding as the crowd laughed. “That’s what I thought it was. Umm…”
Bieber then shrugged. And he kept repeatedly shrugging as DeGeneres drew it out, perhaps to troll him. “There’s something about toes curling and stuff,” she started.
“Yeah, it is what it is, right?” Bieber said, still shrugging. “I’m married.”
“So, you got that yummy,” DeGeneres said.
“That’s what it is, you know,” Bieber said, again with a shrug. Then he took multiple giant gulps of his water. “Is it getting hot in here?” he asked the crowd.
DeGeneres used that to transition to another topic…although later she gave Bieber was “Yummy” gift, and the sex life jokes came up again. You can watch the real awkward exchange go down at the 2:30 mark:
Bieber also addressed how he felt when he proposed to Hailey Baldwin in July 2018 for the first time. The Biebs was scared…but not because she’d say no. He was afraid of whether he could live up to a marriage vow.
“I was extremely nervous [when I proposed to her],” he started. “I felt like in the past, we talked about you know, me asking the question, and I felt like she would say ‘yes,’ so I wasn’t really nervous about the saying yes, but I think I was more nervous about ‘am I gonna make this commitment? Am I able to make this commitment as a man and be able to honor, you know, what I say, you know because that’s a serious commitment, when you say you’re gonna love someone for better or for worse and like, be faithful.’ That’s huge. Am I able to do that?’ And so I think that was really what I was battling with. And I finally was like, ‘You know what? I’m gonna make the decision and follow through with it. Be a husband, and you know, this is what I’ve always wanted. I’m gonna just choose this woman and just do it.'”
