Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, a couple very much in their honeymoon phase, surprisingly chose to spend most of the Grammys ceremony apart, despite being in the same room. But it was still a date night for them once the show ended.
The two were photographed holding hands while leaving the Grammys after party. Cabello changed into a minidress version of the gown she wore on the red carpet.
During the show, Mendes gave fans a little reassurance that he was still very supportive of Cabello despite their decision to spend the first part of the evening separately. He liked an Instagram the Recording Academy shared of her singing on stage:
The two had a joint nomination tonight for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Señorita.” Cabello performed “First Man” to her father during the broadcast, and she also walked the red carpet with her dad.
Cabello has spoken about how much Mendes means to her and why she decided to initially keep their relationship private. In the October issue of ELLE, she acknowledged their initial push for privacy may have ended up creating more buzz around them. “I don’t know; people can say whatever they want to say,” she started. “They can speculate, but at the same time, we are going to live our own lives, enjoy it, and fall for each other like nobody is watching. That is how I want to live. I never want to open the door for people to feel like they are involved. Like I said, I want it to be mine and [his]. That’s why I’m so tight-lipped about it: because I want to protect it.”
Cabello and Mendes attended the Grammys last year, but they did not walk the red carpet together. Cabello wore a sleek pink column gown, while Mendes was in a navy suit:
