Why Rihanna Is Skipping the Grammy Awards in 2020

Those hopeful that Rihanna would grace the Grammys with her presence will have to wait until at least 2021 for RiRi’s comeback. The singer opted not to attend the Los Angeles ceremony this evening, and her absence isn’t that surprising. Rihanna hasn’t released a new album since 2016, so she has no music nominated at the ceremony. She wasn’t tapped to perform or present, so she has no reason to be there. She hasn’t attended the Grammys since 2018.

However, she did attend the Roc Nation brunch yesterday, so she was in Los Angeles for Grammys weekend.

Rihanna teased fans at the end of December that her ninth album is done and she just hasn’t released it yet. “Update: me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it,” she wrote on her Instagram. The trolling drove fans wild in the comments.

Rihanna has remained very busy with her beauty line and two fashion lines (Fenty, her fashion house, and Savage x Fenty, her lingerie line). She reassured Vogue in her November 2019 cover story that she isn’t ending her music career to focus on her other businesses. “Oh, nooo,” she said, affirming she’ll always be a singer first. “Music is, like, speaking in code to the world, where they get it. It’s the weird language that connects me to them. Me the designer, me the woman who creates makeup and lingerie—it all started with music. It was my first pen pal-ship to the world. To cut that off is to cut my communication off. All of these other things flourish on top of that foundation.”
