The nearly three minute trailer for Miss Americana, Netflix’s Taylor Swift documentary, shows a lot of sides of Swift the public hasn’t seen before. The film captures Swift’s first discussions about speaking out politically, along with her overall decision to break free of the “nice girl” persona she was told to adapt when she first started in the industry.
But the glimpses of Swift go beyond her brand and career. The singer also signaled she’s ready for the world to see more of her personal life, including her relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn. The two have dated quietly for three years and have purposely avoided doing red carpets together or speaking about each other in interviews.
In the trailer clip, fans noticed Alwyn seems to appear at two points: When Swift hugs a blond guy after performing (at the 1:06 mark) and when she kisses someone’s hand in the car (at the 1:45 mark). It’s a tease, but it’s also a trailer, so the full film will likely offer more intimate glimpses at the kind of support system Alwyn has been for Swift off-camera.
Swift first hinted to the public that she was going to be more open about her and Alwyn’s relationship at the Golden Globes. She and Alwyn did not walk the red carpet together, but they did sit next to the other during the entire broadcast. The cameras there and guests alike got photos of them having coupley moments during the ceremony. It was the most public date they’ve ever been on. And it was just the beginning, it seems, of the more visible relationship they intend to have in 2020.
Miss Americana will be out on Netflix on January 31.
