Beyoncé Remained Seated During Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Golden Globes Win

Beyoncé didn’t win the Golden Globe she was nominated for tonight, but she still managed to make her own silent statement during the broadcast. When Joaquin Phoenix was announced the winner of Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his work as the Joker in Joker—a divisive film because of its sympathetic, gritty portrayal of a killer comic book villain—Bey remained seated. Viewers, including Twitter’s Sam Stryker, took notice.

Beyoncé did not walk the red carpet during the Globes this evening. She and Jay-Z arrived at the ceremony during the broadcast of the show. The singer had one nomination, Best Original Song – Motion Picture, for her The Lion King track “Spirit.”

The singer spoke to ELLE for its January issue about the moment she took control of her narrative as an artist. And she made clear in her response that she understands the power she has as an A-list star when using her voice to make a statement. And in this case, she chose not to stand with everyone else to applaud Joker winning a Golden Globe.

Bey told ELLE, “The more I mature, the more I understand my value. I realized I had to take control of my work and my legacy because I wanted to be able to speak directly to my fans in an honest way. I wanted my words and my art to come directly from me. There were things in my career that I did because I didn’t understand that I could say no. We all have more power than we realize.”
