Selena Gomez returned to Instagram on the very first day of 2020 to unload tons of photos and videos capturing her 2019 that she lived largely out of the spotlight. There were card games, trips, friends’ weddings, and a hell of a lot of third wheeling, the singer declared. “2019 year of being the third wheel.. I loved it,” she wrote on one photo from July.
The singer shared roughly five minutes worth of content, capturing everything from her work recording her upcoming album Rare to her just hanging at Taylor Swift’s house with her cat. Footage of her at hanging with her friends cooking dumplings with them, and all around just living her best chill life in her 20s abounds:
Seriously, this is a very generous and very real Selena Gomez year highlight reel pic.twitter.com/eqnm8BieZu

The photos revealed what exact date she hung with Swift and Swift’s new cat Benjamin Button (March 12):

And so much more. There were candid birthday selfies, glamorous shots from her Italian birthday vacation, photos of dinners with friends, hair change shots, rehearsal images (she was working on the album through November), and a rare look at Gomez’s Christmas this year. It is a lot of Selena Gomez content to unpack:
Gomez spoke to her friend Raquelle Stevens in an interview last year about how she approaches Instagram content now and what allows her to post so many personal photos without being worried about how it will be perceived. “When I make an effort to post on social media or do what I’m doing, it’s important for me to make sure it’s 100 percent authentic and once I post it, I post it. That’s it,” Gomez said, noting she doesn’t look at the response to her posts.
“I’m very happy with living my life,” she continued. “We were talking about it earlier, being in the present because that’s it. Similar to me posting a photo then walking away, for me that’s it. I’ll do a red carpet, I’ll do whatever, I don’t need to see it. I did it. I participated. I felt wonderful and that’s where the extent of it is. I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say about it.”
