Cruel Intentions Is Rebooting as a Naughty TV Show

The beloved 1999 cult classic Cruel Intentions is being rebooted as a television show for IMDb TV, Amazon’s premium free streaming service, Deadline reports. Now the story will be set in Washington D.C., at an elite college where Greek life dictates student hierarchy. After a hazing incident goes wrong, the Panhellenic system is under threat, causing some dynamic power shifts.

Once again, two step-siblings are willing to get down and dirty to preserve their status, and it sounds like one of them will be charged with seducing the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. The reboot will be headed by writer Phoebe Fisher, supervised by Sara Goodman, and produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios and Original Film.

The original Cruel Intentions was based on a novel called Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos in 1782, and it also covered the depraved behavior of elites using seduction to control and manipulate others. Some themes seem to be timeless! Goodman has a history of working on former Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicles, having written the upcoming series I Know What You Did Last Summer for Prime Video, based on the nineties film. She and Fisher worked on the series together as well, so it was a natural collaboration for Cruel Intentions.

Most fans are probably hoping the new series has some of the campy spice and wanton make out scenes as the original. Recently, the film’s stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair discussed why their on-screen kiss has lived on in so many people’s memories.

“I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people so long is not just for the initial shock value but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are,” said Blair.

Gellar added, “It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture.”

And it was also just a great kiss.
