Why Emily Blunt Wasn’t at John Krasinski’s SNL Debut

On Saturday night, John Krasinski hosted Saturday Night Live—the first show of 2021. Last year, his debut hosting gig was canceled because of the pandemic, so he seemed pretty stoked to be on that stage last night. But it appears he was solo at 30 Rock last night; he told the crowd that his wife, Emily Blunt, is in the U.K.

The joke of the opening monologue was that fans in the audience couldn’t differentiate between John Krasinski and his character from NBC’s The Office, Jim Halpert.

“I got a question. Kiss Pam….I need you to kiss Pam. That is what I need to see today,” cast member Keenan Thompson said from the crowd.

“Guys, here’s the deal,” he answered. “Pam’s not real, he said, explaining that she’s played by an actress named Jenna Fischer. “We are friends, and we are married to other people.”

“Is your wife here?,” Thompson asked.

“No, actually, she’s back in the U.K.,” he said.

“Well, then, kiss Pam,” Thompson, as an Office fan, reasoned.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in December, Blunt told the late-night host that the family had been living in London since August.

“[Violet and Hazel] have been in a proper school with school uniforms, and miraculously, they’re sounding quite British, which I’m completely over the moon about,” she said. “[Someone] sent a video of [Violet] singing “Jingle Bells,” and she goes, ‘Jaingle ol’ the woy,’ almost like a Cockney. It was almost like Dick Van Dyke singing Jingle Bells. The craziest accent ever—it was kind of brilliant.”

Krasinski did mention Blunt earlier in the monologue when he noted that she had actually hosted the show before he did (in 2016).

“My wife, Emily Blunt, actually hosted a few years ago, and she had some great advice. She said John when you…” He was cut off by cast member “Ego” Nwodim asking another The Office-related question.

But he did get to finish his joke featuring his daughters, Hazel (6) and Violet (4). “I have been watching this show since I was 8 years old. I was trying to explain that to my kids, what I was doing this week. I told them, ‘You know how your favorite show is Paw Patrol? My favorite show is SNL, so for me, it’s like I’m on Paw Patrol. And they were like, ‘What? You’re on Paw Patrol?’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And they were like, ‘Call us when you’re on Paw Patrol.'”

The whole monologue ended with Krasinski Pete Davidson kissing, because sure
