Rihanna Says She Felt Like a ‘Clown’ at 2015 Met Gala

Rihanna has long established herself as queen of the Met Gala for leaning into the annual event’s themes and going big. But on the night she wore on of the event’s biggest and most iconic dresses ever, her Guo Pei yellow gown with its large train, she struggled to get out of the car.

She was asked about the look by Access during the outlet’s interview with her about the launch of Fenty Skin.

Rihanna started by explaining that they really had to think out how she was going to make her debut onto the red carpet in that dress because of its size.”That night, the choreography of getting in the car and getting out, like we had to choreograph it,” she started. “Who sits at the door? Where does the coat go? Where do I sit?”

Then she admitted she got extremely nervous about going out on the red carpet because she saw what everyone else was wearing. She felt insecure. (In reality, she outdid everyone and came out as one of the night’s best dressed.) “I remember being so scared to get out of that car because I felt like, ‘I’m doing too much.'” she said. “I was driving past the red carpet, and I was just seeing like gowns, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, like, I’m a clown. People are going to laugh at me. This is like, too much.’ I thought that. I circled like, three times, I’m not even joking, and finally, I was like, ‘Whatever, let’s go. Let’s just go. Let’s just go.’ I know. I don’t regret it,” she said, reflecting in hindsight on the choice.

She is aware of the memes that her dress inspired. In fact, she’s in awe of one. “The frying pan with the egg, legendary, legendary,” she said. You can watch her full interview below:
