Early this month, Grimes and Elon Musk welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named “X Æ A-12 Musk.” While the rest of the world grappled with how to pronounce the baby’s name, the state of California, where he was born, apparently got wind that the name wouldn’t comply with state law.
“A name like ‘X Æ A-12’ would not be allowed,” Matt Conens, from the Office of Public Affairs of the California Department of Public Health, wrote in an email to USA TODAY. “Vital records must be completed with the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language and appropriate punctuation such as hyphens, apostrophes, periods, and commas.”
When commenters on Grimes’s Instagram asked about the new spelling, the singer confirmed that they had changed the name from “X Æ A-12” to “X Æ A-Xii.”
“Roman numerals. Looks better tbh,” she wrote.
She also added that one dash is allowed to remain in her son’s name.

Upon her son’s birth, Grimes tweeted the meaning behind his name and broke it down letter by letter. Even though many people commented that they still didn’t understand a single thing Grimes said after her explanation, at least she offered us one?
“•X, the unknown variable •Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)•A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent (A=Archangel, my favorite song)”

When one follower on Instagram asked Grimes what they call the baby, she simply replied, “He has many names.”
Well, that’s good.
