If your pores are feeling clogged, a blackhead removal mask can work to dislodge the buildup and reveal a clear, radiant complexion. “If you are prone to blackheads, exfoliating can prevent dead skin cells and oil from becoming trapped in your pores and more blackheads from forming,” explains Dr. Howard Sobel, a NYC-based dermatologist. “Blackhead masks work by exposing the blackhead to ingredients that dissolve them while the mask is applied and with continued use, blackheads can improve, and ultimately be prevented in the future.”
Dr. Sobel recommends looking for ingredients that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or a combination of both. “These chemical exfoliators help loosen dead skin cells and oil that could be clogging the follicle,” he says. “A low strength retinoid is another great option as it helps speed up cell turnover.” And when in doubt, charcoal it out. Dr. Sobel notes that charcoal is a great natural ingredient that helps absorb dirt and impurities from your pores.
Lastly, a friendly reminder that while it might be tempting to squeeze blackheads out on your own, it’s not recommended. “Your fingers have oils and dirt, which could cause further breakouts, plus you could severely harm your skin by pressing on it incorrectly,” says Dr. Sobel. “Try to be patient or seek out a dermatologist if the problem persists.”
