Celebrities were feeling wistful yesterday on what would’ve been Met Gala Monday. Most shared throwback photos of them at the ball or on its red carpet during previous years. But Katy Perry went ahead and shared a photo of the corset she had been planning to wear on this year’s red carpet had the event not been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. “what would have been… #TheMetBall2020💔,” she captioned the shot of the piece on a mannequin, tagging Jean Paul Gaultier.
Perry is pregnant, so the outfit was designed to showcase her body as it is now. It’s unclear when the Met Gala will be held (the Met museum is closed indefinitely), but at the point where the celebration can safely be held, Perry will likely already have given birth. Her baby is due this summer.
Perry would’ve channeled ’90s Madonna with her cone bra outfit, fitting with the Gala’s About Time: Fashion and Duration theme. That theme, according to the The New York Times, was borne out of a “tension between the desire for sustainability and a garment that lasts and the desire for planned obsolescence and a new garment that drives us back into a store” in the fashion industry.
A Met spokesperson said in March that after the CDC advised there should not be any gatherings of 50 people or more in the next eight weeks, the museum decided “in deference to this guidance, all programs and events through May 15 will be canceled or postponed.” The Met Gala was, of course, among those events. No new date has been announced yet, and New York City remains under a stay-at-home order.
