Everyone was pretty shocked when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they were stepping down as senior royals in January. But—surprise!—it looks like the couple had been hinting at their exit from the royal family for months beforehand.
Dr. Jane Goodall is friends with Prince Harry, and she recently told Daily Mail about a conversation that she had with him last summer, way before Harry and Meghan left the royal family and moved to California. Dr. Goodall recalled when Harry interviewed her for Meghan’s September issue of British Vogue and shared:
At the end [of the conversation] Meghan came in to listen with Archie. He was very tiny and very sleepy—not too pleased to be passed from his mummy. I think I was one of the first to cuddle him outside the family. I made Archie do the Queen’s wave, saying, “I suppose he’ll have to learn this.” Harry said, “No, he’s not growing up like that.”
Many see Harry saying that Archie isn’t “growing up like that” as a clear sign that Harry didn’t want Archie growing up in the royal family like he did. The Daily Mail speculates Dr. Goodall and Harry’s conversation happened in July, a full six months before Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back from their working royal family roles.
Now that Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals, they just moved to LA and announced that they’re calling their brand-new foundation Archewell, which is of course partially inspired by Archie. They plan to announce more details in due time but currently are focused on the coronavirus pandemic.
