The 19th spring marks the 65th anniversary of Oksana Zabuzhko – writers, literary scholars, esotericists, who have created all sorts of translations across the twenty-first world, from Poland and Austria to Serbia, Croatia and Succeedings States.
Oksana Zabuzhko was born near Lutsk in the literary homeland of the sixties: her father is a teacher, translator and literary critic, who was subject to repression under Stalin’s watch and was exiled to Baikal; Mother is a reader of Ukrainian literature. Following the words of Oksana Zabuzhko, she received philological knowledge at home, in her homeland; and at the Kiev National University named after Shevchenka she graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy and a postgraduate course in Aesthetics.

“Polish investigation into Ukrainian sex”, 1996
One of the most important Ukrainian novels of the 90s. In 1996, Oksana Zabuzhko’s brave book actually became a revolution in Ukrainian literature – through the doors of erotic scenes and feminist optics (respected as one of the first feminist novels of today Ukraine). The plot of the book is about a series of complex stories of Ukrainian poets who come to the USA and sculptors. Viyshov’s novel is written in ten languages, both French and English, and has been seen ten times in Ukraine.
The “Polish Investigations of Ukrainian Sex” itself showed Zabuzhko a keen eye for the boundaries of Fatherlandism, and this happened in the 90s, and then in the 2000s, not only on the corrosiveness of Oksana herself. “A Tale about Kalina's Sopilka”, 2000
“A Tale about the Viburnum Sopilka”, published first in 2000 editions by the publication “Fakt” and re-read in “Komori”, is perhaps one of the most important texts of Oksana Zabuzhko. This is a metaphorical parable of the Baroque fairy tale, which is based on the folk tale “The fairy tale about the wondrous sniffle”, in which a man is transformed into a tree, and the main idea of the work is the follow-up of the female version of the legend about Cain and Abel.
The story about two sisters, Hanna and Olenka, Grandma’s Donka and Grandfather’s Donka (they smell the same thing, about different fathers) in Oksana Zabuzhko’s version turns into a tense, between-the-mountain, psychological drama about sisterhood, hundred years Between young women there is a concept of sin. “The Tale of the Kalinov Sopilka” was translated into Polish and Czech and went on the stages of many theaters. Zokrema, a new show recently appeared at the Kharkiv Lyalok Theater directed by Oksana Dmitrieva.
“Planet Polin”, 2020
The importance of this view is important to re-evaluate: “Planet Pauline” is a collection of the most present Zabuzhko eseys for the remaining 20 years. The 14 Essays have portraits of important heroes and heroines who symbolize the current era: from the mystic Katerina Bilokur and the literary scholar Solomiya Pavlichko to the mathematician, dissident Leonid Plyushch and literary historian Yuri Shevelova.
If you are able to perceive all the texts not separately, but at once, as a whole text, then you can see the poetic portrait of the 20th century father of Oksana Zabuzhko and better understand the context in which the key intellectuals of the Ukrainian and foreign countries worked. “Planet Pauline” is one of Zabuzhko’s best-selling collections: in 2020, she won the BBC Book of Rock award in the “Eseism” nomination, and in 2023 she won the “Angelus” from the longlist of the Literary Town of Central Europe.
