The French specialist in plant biotechnology and cosmetic active ingredients has chosen Vela, a French start-up designing and operating a new generation of wind-powered cargo ships, for its weekly transatlantic shipments to its U.S. subsidiary. Interested since the Vela project was announced nearly two years ago, Greentech is now confirming its commitment to initial connections starting in 2026.
“A shared DNA, a measured and mindful objective—we are not changing the course of our civilization, and we won’t do less, nor will we do more—we’ll do better,” said Jean-Yves Berthon, CEO of Greentech.
According to Vela, their wind-powered shipping solution slashes carbon emissions by a factor of 40, while cutting transatlantic delivery time in half.
“Our sincere thanks to Greentech for their trust from day one. This contract is a major milestone: it secures volume on our first vessel, operational as of next year, and paves the way for the next four. A visionary move, perfectly aligned with our shared values and bold strategy for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries,” stated Pierre Arnaud Vallon, CEO of Vela.
The choice of transatlantic sailing is not entirely new in the cosmetics industry. In 2021, Clarins pledged that from 2023, 20% of its exports to the United States would be transported by Neoline’s sailing cargo ships.
