For the cover of the December 25, 2023, issue, the cartoonist Edward Steed depicts his version of a New York street, where a gritty exterior can belie a fantasy universe just underneath the surface. “Just like anywhere else, New York City is not always what it seems. There is another world out there, if you are not afraid to look for it,” he says.
