Researchers claim that certain foods have a positive effect on cognitive function. This is especially true for foods containing flavonols. Cocoa, in particular, holds the record for highest levels of these substances. This includes the delicious hot drink made with it.
Eating chocolate and drinking hot cocoa can improve brain function, according to scientists from the University of Birmingham. Flavonols are also abundant in other foods, including green tea, grapes, apples, and berries. But cocoa powder contains the highest concentration of the substance.
The benefits of flavonols were confirmed in a study involving 18 adult men aged 18 to 40. They first inhaled 5% carbon dioxide, which disrupted blood flow to the brain. Afterward, the subjects drank hot beverages.
Participants were divided into two groups. The first drank regular hot chocolate. The second group received a cocoa-based drink with increased flavonol content. They then completed various cognitive tests. After drinking the natural cocoa, the subjects solved the problems 11% faster than the others.
Thus, the researchers confirmed that this product is highly effective in improving brain function. They believe that regular consumption of natural cocoa will bring significant benefits.
