Do drinking and smoking affect men's sperm?

To improve sperm quality, men suffering from infertility should abstain from alcohol and smoking. British researchers believe that such a recommendation has no impact on a man's fertility and only wastes precious time for future fathers.

Scientists from the University of Manchester have stated that a man's lifestyle and unhealthy habits have no impact on the quality of his sperm. British specialists reached this conclusion after examining data from more than 2,200 men from 14 infertility clinics. The men were asked to complete questionnaires about their lifestyle. The researchers then compared their responses with the results of their semen analysis.

It turned out that some factors did influence the number of live sperm. For example, lower concentrations were found in men who had undergone testicular surgery, dark-skinned men, and those who engaged in heavy physical labor. Interestingly, alcohol habits, drug use, smoking, and weight had little effect on sperm quality.

Although lifestyle plays a major role in our health, the results of the experiment show that bad habits do not affect the number of live sperm in semen, scientists say.
