Strappy sandals from the 1990s are making a comeback – and are becoming a major trend for summer 2026

It seems like the most obvious trend for summer 2026 has already been identified – and it’s a comeback that no one can ignore. The 1990s iconic strappy sandals are once again taking over the runways, from Miu Miu’s surfer aesthetic to Toteme’s minimalist kitten-heeled silhouettes and Chloé’s dramatic platforms. But this time, they’re not coming back as nostalgia, but as a new fashion manifesto – bolder, more modern and much more desirable. Inspired by the aesthetic of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and the wardrobe of supermodels from that era, these sandals are already claiming the status of the season’s top favorite – and it looks like they’ll be literally everywhere soon.

The fetish aesthetic of the 1990s is making a loud and uncompromising comeback – and this time it’s much more revealing. In the collections of Miu Miu, Moschino and Tom Ford, thin straps are combined with metal rings in the harness style – a detail that instantly adds tension and provocation to the image. At the same time, hybrid models that combine strappy and T-bar silhouettes are coming to the fore: Coperni suggests wearing them as an accent to discreet looks – for a spectacular contrast and a modern sound.

Another variation on the fetish trend is the ultra-thin straps with decorative rings by Tom Ford, which work perfectly in evening looks in the spirit of femme fatale. At the same time, designers are rethinking the classics through shape: a hybrid of sandals and “tanga” models acquires asymmetrical lines and non-standard heels, as in Proenza Schouler – a solution that is perceived as fresh and perfectly suitable for special events and festive outings.

However, alongside this drama, there is also a timeless elegance. Dolce & Gabbana offered a sophisticated interpretation of the 1990s – black sandals with thin straps, a high stiletto and a delicate logo, which are easily integrated into the wardrobe: from midi dresses to suits or even micro shorts. And nude, almost “invisible” models, beloved among celebrities, once again consolidate the status of a universal base – the same pair that works with any look and never fails.
