Forgotten shoes are back in fashion: espadrilles have become the main trend of summer 2026

There are things that fade from time to time, but never disappear completely. Espadrilles are one of them – shoes with a centuries-old history that dates back long before fashion trends. Today, this simple design has become one of the most recognizable summer models. In the 2026 season, espadrilles are back in the fashion spotlight: they are returned to the catwalks of Celine and Jacquemus, offering modern interpretations – from urban and office looks to the relaxed aesthetics of the Mediterranean summer.

Espadrilles have been on the back burner of fashion for some time. A few years ago, the Chanel double-emblem model became a summer it-shoe, combining casualness with couture elegance. While Matthew Blasi didn't reinvent the espadrille in his debut collection for Chanel, Michael Ryder, who is also taking his first steps as creative director at Celine, decided to bring back the iconic model with its signature jute sole.

In Celine's performance, espadrilles have received a new sound – now they confidently move into the officewear category. Instead of traditional beach options, designers suggest wearing them in the city, combining them with monochrome office looks. Fitted pants and a white jacket – in this styling, espadrilles visually lengthen the silhouette and regain their status as fashionable classics.

Espadrilles were a key motif in the Jacquemus collection, presented at the Orangerie Château de Versailles. The Le Paysan collection is a nod to Simon Porte Jacquemus' childhood in the south of France. Espadrilles are available in both flat and wedge versions, in natural tones and materials that evoke a summery air of lightness. The graphic jute sole, ankle straps and hand-made details are a reminder of the artisanal traditions that the designer is committed to preserving.
