It has been a couple of years since season 4 of HBO’s popular crime anthology program True Detective was released, and the anticipation for a fifth season has intensified. The prior season, entitled Night Country, featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the primary investigators situated in Alaska.

Who Is Part of the True Detective Season 5 Roster?
No actor has been verified for season 5 of True Detective as of yet, though reports emerged in 2025 concerning Nicolas Cage potentially headlining the season. According to Variety, Cage was “approaching an agreement” to appear in the show.
Where Will True Detective Season 5 Be Set?
Numerous news sources indicated in 2025 that season 5 of True Detective will unfold in Jamaica Bay, New York, which represents an inlet situated on the southern area of western Long Island.
In a conversation with Deadline in February 2025, HBO’s executive of drama programming, Francesca Orsi, verified that season 5 will be based in New York. Issa López is slated to return to helm season 5.
“Issa possesses a wealth of ideas, much like she showcased with Night Country,” Orsi expressed to Deadline. “It’s a unique environment but equally compelling.”
In a December 2024 discussion with The New York Post, López hinted that season 5 will incorporate some “associations” with season 4, despite the introduction of a new ensemble.
“There are going to be some notable ties linking everything that transpires in Ennis, Alaska, and the individuals within Ennis, Alaska, to the events of the upcoming [season],” López articulated. “That being stated, it’s an original narrative, fresh characters, everything. There’s a touch of delight for admirers of Night Country.”
