Who isn’t fond of the popular Toy Story saga? Pixar’s cherished animated saga has captivated viewers ever since its initial release in 1995. The narrative centers on a collection of sentient toys, including Tom Hanks‘ character Sheriff Woody and Tim Allen‘s Buzz Lightyear, who were initially the possessions of Andy Davis (John Morris) and subsequently embark on extraordinary adventures together. The franchise, brought to life by filmmakers such as John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Joe Ranft, has since expanded to encompass three sequels—Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019)—with a fifth installment now in development. The initial four films garnered critical acclaim, achieved significant box office success, and collectively received numerous Academy Award nominations and victories, establishing a high benchmark for the forthcoming chapter.
Fans were finally treated to a preview for Toy Story 5 in November 2025, which introduced a new peril for Woody, Buzz, and their companions. Following the introduction of a novel piece of technology named Lilypad, the toys confront the implications this presents for them.
A significant contributor to the saga’s triumph is its memorable ensemble of characters. Apart from Woody and Buzz, the movies feature Mr. Potato Head (originally voiced by the late Don Rickles), Mrs. Potato Head (voiced by the late Estelle Harris), Slinky Dog (voiced by the late Jim Varney and subsequently by Blake Clark), Hamm (voiced by John Ratzenberger), Rex (voiced by Wallace Shawn), Bo Peep (voiced by Annie Potts), and Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack), among numerous others. In Toy Story 5, the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head have been recast due to the passing of Rickles and Harris, with new performers stepping in to carry on their roles.
Beyond the primary film series, the Toy Story universe has seen expansion through related works, including the Disney+ series Forky Asks a Question and the 2022 film Lightyear, which starred Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz. Nevertheless, enthusiasts are most eagerly anticipating Toy Story 5, slated for a theatrical debut this summer. Here is a comprehensive overview of what is known about the highly awaited sequel.

On February 8, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger officially announced that a fifth installment of Toy Story was under development during an investor conference, as reported by Deadline. At that point, scant information was available regarding the cast, plot, or release schedule.
Since then, Pixar has divulged considerably more about the motion picture. The narrative is set to embrace a more contemporary direction, concentrating on the challenges toys face in remaining relevant within a technologically advanced world. This time, the core conflict revolves around a smart device named Lilypad, which starts to divert Bonnie’s attention away from her toys.
The film will also pivot its focus towards Jessie, who assumes a more prominent leadership capacity, while Woody—who departed at the conclusion of Toy Story 4—is reintegrated into the storyline. Buzz Lightyear also makes a comeback, including multiple iterations of the character, introducing a fresh dynamic to the plot. Furthermore, new characters are being introduced, such as Blaze, a self-assured new child protagonist, and various technologically themed toys. Conan O’Brien lends his voice to Smarty Pants, a peculiar and somewhat dated device, while Greta Lee portrays Lilypad.
The film will also signify a transition for certain established characters. Following the unfortunate passing of Don Rickles and Estelle Harris, Toy Story 5 features new voice actors for Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, with the consent of their respective families.
Prior to the release of the fourth movie in 2019, Tom Hanks indicated on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that it would be his final performance as Woody. “We were saying goodbye to Woody and Buzz…and it was emotional,” he recounted. This sentiment understandably dismayed fans—however, producer Mark Nielsen initially hinted at the possibility of a fifth film during Pixar’s press event for Toy Story 4. He commented, “Every film we make, we treat it like it’s the first and the last film we’re ever going to make, so you force yourself to make it hold up. You don’t get in over your skis. Whether there’s another one? I don’t know. If there is, it’s tomorrow’s problem.” Tim Allen subsequently offered fans increased optimism for Toy Story 5 by confirming in a 2019 interview that he would reprise his role as Buzz for a fifth installment. “Once you’ve gotten to four, you’re passed that trilogy [point], so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do it, certainly. If you ask me, I’d say do five,” he stated, as reported by Cinemablend.
