Over ten years after its initial debut, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to receive another substantial update. CD Projekt RED has surprised its player base by announcing “Songs of the Past,” a completely new narrative expansion that will feature Geralt of Rivia embarking on a fresh adventure in 2027. This forthcoming downloadable content represents the game’s third major expansion, following in the footsteps of “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine,” and arrives amidst escalating anticipation for The Witcher 4.

From the anticipated return of Geralt to the potential implications for the franchise’s future, here’s a comprehensive overview of what is known about “Songs of the Past.”

Will ‘The Witcher 3’ Be Receiving a New Expansion?

Indeed. CD Projekt RED has officially confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be graced with a new expansion titled Songs of the Past, marking the first significant story-focused DLC for the game in over a decade. This project is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, the Polish studio currently engaged in the creation of the original Witcher game’s remake.

In contrast to the minor updates and next-generation patches that have been released in recent years, Songs of the Past is being characterized as a complete narrative expansion. CD Projekt RED has stated that it will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, indicating the studio’s intention to move beyond older console hardware for this release.

What Exactly Is ‘Songs of the Past’?

Songs of the Past is the forthcoming third major expansion for The Witcher 3, succeeding Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Although CD Projekt RED has yet to disclose comprehensive plot details, the company has described it as a “new standalone adventure” that centers on Geralt of Rivia.

According to the announcement, the expansion has been crafted utilizing insights gained from the game’s initial DLCs, both of which were lauded for introducing many hours of gameplay and significant new story arcs. Preliminary information suggests that Songs of the Past might revisit locations and characters connected to Geralt’s early career as a witcher, though CDPR has not officially confirmed any returning characters beyond Geralt himself.

Doug Cockle, the long-standing English voice actor for Geralt, is expected to resume his role, though CD Projekt RED has not yet made a formal announcement regarding the voice cast. The studio explicitly stated that players will “step back into the boots of Geralt” for a new quest involving monster hunting.

When Is ‘Songs of the Past’ Scheduled for Release?

CD Projekt RED has indicated that Songs of the Past is slated for release in 2027. The company has not yet provided a precise launch date, nor has a gameplay trailer been made available thus far.

This expansion is anticipated to launch prior to The Witcher 4, which CD Projekt RED had previously suggested would not be released before the conclusion of 2027.
