Take a step back to the 1930s! The forthcoming Spider-Noir series from Amazon MGM Studios, headlined by Nicolas Cage, is reviving the monochrome and vibrant shades in cinematic storytelling, allowing audiences to experience the show in both visual styles.
During a chat with Esquire in February 2026, Nicolas revealed that the choice to present the series in both grayscale and full color was initially his proposition to the studio.
“I can see the reasoning behind offering it in both formats, as I actually suggested it from the start,” the National Treasure star mentioned. “I recall when Amazon first contemplated the project, they expressed some apprehension about black and white. I countered by saying, ‘It doesn’t have to be strictly in black and white. It can also be in color, catering to viewers of all ages.’ Those less familiar with black and white can still appreciate the color version. The color palette is stunning, but the monochrome aesthetic is what originally appealed to me.”

Is Spider-Noir About Spider-Man?
In a way. Spider-Noir does center on a more seasoned iteration of Spider-Man, yet he’s a world apart from the adolescent Peter Parker that viewers are acquainted with and adore. Producer Chris Miller previously depicted the character to Esquire as “quite dissimilar to the Peter Parker we’ve seen in the movies. He’s older, cynical, and not hesitant to drunkenly land a punch.”
Co-producer Phil Lord further noted that Ben “experienced his moment of disillusionment, akin to Chinatown, many years ago.”
Showrunner Oren Uziel elaborated that the youthful Peter Parker character “resonates strongly with a high schooler. Naive. On the rise, whereas Ben Reilly “has already navigated the entire trajectory and witnessed everything. He’s over it, attempting to move on. However, his history consistently resurfaces to trouble him. It’s simply a distinct rendition that we haven’t encountered before.”

Who Is in the Spider-Noir Cast?
The Spider-Noir ensemble includes Nicolas as Ben Reilly, also recognized as The Spider: the main private eye. The seasoned actor is joined by Lamorne Morris portraying Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li embodying Cat Hardy, Karen Rodriguez taking on the role of Janet, Jack Huston bringing Flint Marko to life, and Brendan Gleeson appearing as Silvermane.
