The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, helmed by series regular Francis Lawrence, is preparing for its greatly awaited debut this year, signifying the franchise’s comeback to theaters for the first time since The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Even though it is the latest entry, the movie transports viewers decades into the past, long before Katniss Everdeen (embodied by Jennifer Lawrence) volunteered as tribute. This origin story explores the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy — played by Woody Harrelson in the initial movies — and the harrowing occasions of the 50th Hunger Games, more famously recognized as the Second Quarter Quell.
“Haymitch has consistently been a character loved by fans, and his beginnings are among the most eagerly anticipated within the series,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman stated in a formal announcement. “We are eager for audiences to witness the narrative that shaped a truly unforgettable personality in the saga.”
With Joseph Zada taking the lead as young Haymitch, the prequel presents a new ensemble of emerging talents and recognizable individuals entering the realm of Panem. According to The Hollywood Reporter, familiar faces like Jennifer and Josh will reappear, reprising their iconic roles as Katniss and Peeta, respectively.
Here is a glimpse into the cast featured in this eagerly anticipated return to the arena.
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen
Even if her on-screen time is brief, it’s still a monumental occasion for the original protagonist of the franchise. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the actress will reprise her role as Katniss in a “flash-forward scene.” The particular scene likely alludes to the book’s epilogue, depicting Haymitch developing a bond with Katniss and Peeta as they mature.
Josh Hutcherson
According to THR, Josh will be back as Peeta in the “flash-forward scene.” While promoting his other endeavors, the I Love LA actor maintained secrecy about any specifics regarding his return.
Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy
Zada, an actor hailing from Australia, is assuming the character of Haymitch Abernathy during his younger years. In the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch was the sole male tribute to emerge from District 12. Zada has been seen in Australian productions such as Invisible Boys and Total Control. Moreover, he is poised to appear in the upcoming series We Were Liars and East of Eden, starring alongside Florence Pugh.
Selecting a younger performer to embody such a well-known role proved to be a challenge. During an interview with Variety in March 2025, producer Nina Jacobson acknowledged the complexities of identifying someone who could capture the essence of Haymitch without directly mirroring Harrelson’s initial interpretation.
“No one can embody Woody Harrelson other than Woody Harrelson,” she expressed. “You don’t desire someone imitating Woody, but rather an actor who convincingly embodies the persona of a younger rendition of the character, pre-dating the trauma, grief, and anger resulting from the aftermath of the Games.”

Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee
Jesse Plemons will portray Plutarch Heavensbee, an emerging figure within the Capitol who holds great importance to the future of Panem. The 38-year-old actor is recognized for his highly praised work in The Power of the Dog, Breaking Bad, and Fargo.
As per Deadline, Westerman, the Co-President of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, conveyed in a statement that “Jesse ranks among the most gifted actors of this era, evidenced by his discerning approach to role selection. We are privileged that he has chosen to offer his own interpretation of one of Panem’s most captivating personalities. His previous teamwork with Philip Seymour Hoffman renders this occurrence even more significant. His portrayal of Plutarch will stand both as an homage to the character known and loved by fans and as an individual creation of his own. We look forward to viewers witnessing it.”

First interpreted by Stanley Tucci, Caesar Flickerman will now appear 24 years younger than when we initially encountered him in The Hunger Games. The lively and charismatic showman is well-known for his engaging presence as he introduces the tributes onto the stage prior to their battle until death. In Sunrise, Caesar will be brought to life by Kieran Culkin.

Billy Porter as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman
Before Caesar Flickerman emerged as the face of Capitol extravagance, Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman reigned—his vibrant and pioneering predecessor. In Sunrise on the Reaping, Lucky holds the distinction of being the Capitol’s inaugural Hunger Games presenter, presenting to viewers the twisted spectacle for the first time.
Lucky Flickerman will be portrayed by Billy Porter, whose compelling presence on stage and incisive delivery position him as a natural choice for the Capitol limelight. Porter is most renowned for his Emmy-winning contribution to Pose, along with his innovative showings on both Broadway stages and red carpets.

Glenn Close as Casca Highbottom
Casca Highbottom, the academy’s dean, is the thoughtful and gloomy intellectual credited with inventing the Hunger Games, though against her preference. In Sunrise on the Reaping, she is represented in her later years as the Games near their 50th anniversary.
Acclaimed actress Glenn Close will tackle the character of Casca Highbottom. A seven-time Oscar nominee, Close garners recognition for her potent portrayals in movies such as Fatal Attraction, The Wife, and Hillbilly Elegy.
