The Pogues experienced the loss of one of their own in the fourth season of Outer Banks. The popular Netflix adventure series has confirmed that season 5 will mark the conclusion of the show. Now that viewers are aware of JJ’s tragic demise, many have begun pleading with actor Rudy Pankow to emulate Ward Cameron and devise a strategy for his return. But is such a comeback feasible in the fifth season?

When Does Outer Banks Season 5 Come Out?
Following the conclusion of season 4 in November 2024, series star Chase Stokes (who portrays John B.) shared the season 5 announcement from Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke on his Instagram.
“Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we’re putting Season Four behind us and turning to Season Five, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago,” the creators’ letter stated. “Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”
Season 5 of Outer Banks is scheduled for release on August 20, 2026.

Did Rudy Pankow Quit OBX?
Rudy did not exit Outer Banks. In a conversation with Netflix, the actor recounted the moment he discovered his character was slated for death.
“When I first found out JJ was gonna risk it all and not make it, I understood it,” Rudy affirmed. “And the risks grew exponentially, and the stakes escalated continuously.”
Describing his OBX experience as a “huge honor to portray a character so beautiful and selfless,” Rudy added that JJ’s demise — while profoundly distressing for the Pogues and the audience — prompts a critical question: Is the pursuit of treasure worth jeopardizing one’s life?
“His death really does set up the future of OBX with the question, what is worth it?” Rudy elaborated. “And when someone that close to you is gone, how do you navigate that?”

Will JJ Return in Outer Banks Season 5?
It remains uncertain how a revival could occur in OBX‘s final season. Numerous fans, however, have publicly expressed their desire for JJ’s comeback, with some referencing Ward Cameron’s reappearance in season 3. In the second season, Ward (portrayed by actor Charles Esten) orchestrated his own staged death through a boat explosion. When season 3 revealed he was still alive, the character absorbed several bullets intended for his daughter, Sarah (Madelyn Cline), providing a poignant conclusion for the complex figure.
However, JJ’s demise appears to be definitive. At the close of season 4, JJ’s partner, Kiara (Madison Bailey), and the remaining Pogues pledge to seek retribution for JJ’s death, seemingly by targeting Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane).
