One of her Instagram Stories at that time featured a message stating, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Confining everyone together, with no escape, without power, without water … People have failed to learn from our past. And similarly to our past, people are silently observing it unfold. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
Following the news of Melissa’s dismissal in November 2023, Spyglass issued the subsequent declaration through a representative to Variety: “Spyglass’s position is entirely unambiguous: We maintain zero tolerance for antisemitism or any instigation of hatred, including inaccurate depictions of genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust misrepresentation, or anything that blatantly oversteps the boundaries into hate speech.”

Did Christopher Landon, The Director, Terminate Melissa Barrera?
No, Christopher Landon, the initial director of Scream 7, did not fire Melissa, as he clarified in a public announcement. Addressing the apparent criticism he received from the fanbase, the filmmaker posted, “This is my statement: This all stinks. Quit the uproar. This wasn’t a choice I could make.”

Melissa commented on her departure from Scream 7 in a statement shared to her Instagram Stories in November 2023. She initiated the statement by stating, “Firstly, I denounce Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn animosity and bias of any sort against any demographic. As a Latina, a proud Mexican, I acknowledge the responsibility that comes with having a platform that gives me the advantage of being heard; consequently, I have aimed to utilize it to create greater awareness of issues that are important to me and offer support to those in need.”
“Each individual on our planet — irrespective of faith, race, heritage, gender, sexuality, or financial standing — is entitled to identical human rights, respect, and, naturally, autonomy,” Melissa went on to say. “I believe a population should NOT be equated with their leadership, and that no institution should be immune from critique. I consistently hope for an end to deaths, an end to brutality, and for amicable coexistence. I will persist in advocating for those who are most vulnerable and in promoting peace and security, human rights, and liberty. Remaining silent is not a viable option for me.”

Why Won’t Jenna Ortega Appear in Scream 7?
Original reports suggested that Jenna Ortega opted out of Scream 7 due to scheduling difficulties with other engagements, like Wednesday. However, she clarified the truth during a discussion with The Cut in April 2025.
“It wasn’t about money or coordinating schedules,” Jenna confirmed. “The Melissa situation was unfolding, and everything seemed to be disintegrating.”
Not only did Christopher, the filmmaker, leave the project, but Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, the directing team, also departed after Jenna resigned.
“Given that Scream VII wouldn’t involve that group of directors and those individuals whom I cherished, it didn’t strike me as the correct choice for me in my professional path at that moment,” Jenna concluded.
