Lizzie McGuire debuted on January 12, 2001, and things haven’t been quite the same ever since. The Disney Channel program became incredibly popular and turned Hilary Duff into a major celebrity. What made Lizzie so special was that she was easily identifiable for youngsters and adolescents at the time. The program depicted the triumphs and trials of the lovable middle schooler, who also had a larger-than-life animated other self.

The show was such a phenomenon that it led to the 2003 film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Lizzie and her pals embarked on a class excursion to Italy, where Lizzie learned she had a look-alike, who also happened to be an Italian music sensation. “What Dreams Are Made Of,” the tune Lizzie performed at the conclusion of the movie, is still a beloved song today, and Hilary even sang the song live for the first time in early 2026.

Hilary and the majority of her co-stars were slated to come back for a relaunch of the show on Disney+ that would focus on Lizzie in her 30s as she navigates life in New York. After some behind-the-scenes problems, the exit of show creator Terri Minsky, and Hilary’s desire to have the show moved to Hulu. Hilary revealed in December 2020 that the relaunch would not be taking place. “I know the efforts and discussions have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly and despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen,” she said in her statement. Regardless, we’ll always have Lizzie McGuire. Find out where the entire cast is now.
