Rob Reiner, the distinguished director behind When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, and Stand By Me, along with his spouse, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered deceased in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, residence on December 14, 2025, in what appears to be a double homicide. Rob had reached the age of 78, and Michele was 68.

According to The New York Times, law enforcement officials reported that their daughter, Romy Reiner, found her father’s body around 3:30 p.m. She was alerted after a massage therapist, unable to contact the couple for a scheduled appointment, reached out to her. Paramedics later located Michele’s body within the home. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, who had been residing with his parents, was apprehended later that evening and has since been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, accused of fatally stabbing both his parents.

In the months following the deeply saddening news, many are contemplating his life, his career, and the family unit he established over the years. Who Was Rob Reiner?

Reiner was a celebrated American actor, director, producer, and advocate — and the offspring of the renowned comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner. He initially gained prominence portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the iconic sitcom All in the Family before emerging as one of Hollywood’s most esteemed directors.

Throughout his career, Reiner helmed cherished films such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men, and Stand By Me, earning widespread acclaim for his adaptability across genres including comedy, romance, and drama.

Who Was Rob Reiner’s Wife?

Reiner was married to Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and philanthropist, whom he espoused in 1989. The couple maintained their union for decades and largely kept their personal lives away from public scrutiny.

Prior to his marriage to Michele, Reiner was previously wed to actress and director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. The former couple shared a daughter before they parted ways.

How Many Children Did Rob Reiner Have?

Reiner was a father to four children. He had three children — Jake Reiner, Nick Reiner, and Romy Reiner — with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, and also adopted his daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his earlier marriage to Penny Marshall.

Several of his children went on to forge careers in film, television, and the arts, including Nick, who co-authored the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie (2015), which Reiner directed.

Jake and Romy offered touching tributes to their deceased parents in a heart-wrenching statement following their passing.

“Words cannot adequately convey the immeasurable sorrow we are enduring each moment of the day,” the siblings stated. “The ghastly and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is an experience no one should ever face. They were not merely our parents; they were our closest confidantes.”

Jake and Romy also extended gratitude to the public for their support and requested privacy during their period of mourning.

In April 2026, Jake composed a poignant letter via Substack detailing the moment he received the news of his parents’ demise.

“My parents will not be present at my wedding, they will not have the opportunity to hold their future grandchild, and they will not witness me achieve the successful career I am still striving for,” Jake wrote. “It simultaneously shatters my heart and fills me with rage. Nothing can adequately prepare you for the profound impact of losing both parents simultaneously and instantly.”

He further commented that Rob and Michele’s deaths were “too devastating to truly grasp.”
