Marc Johnson, the renowned skateboarder from the Bay Area, California, has passed away at the age of 49, as announced by his friend and fellow skater Louie Barletta in an emotional tribute. While friends and admirers grieve this significant loss, many are curious about the circumstances surrounding his death, particularly since Johnson reportedly had no known serious medical conditions.
“As I write this, the reality still hasn’t fully sunk in,” Barletta expressed in his statement, which was shared by Thrasher Magazine on May 26, 2026. “I first met Marc when he was 17. I witnessed him achieve all his skateboarding aspirations, and I was by his side at the Away Days premiere—only to later see his career falter. I still cannot comprehend why my friend is no longer with us at 49 years old. I’m uncertain why he decided to visit me. Was there a greater purpose behind it, or was he seeking some form of resolution?”
Barletta further described his late companion as “a genius and a tormented soul,” adding, “He conveyed to me that he wished to be remembered for his skateboarding achievements, not for his setbacks or imperfections. He was merely a humble kid from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who grew up in a trailer at the end of a gravel road. Despite this, he broke free, traversed the globe, and impacted countless lives. His legacy will endure through his video parts, which are truly inimitable.”

“Without any doubt, Marc Johnson was the single most impactful individual in my life,” Barletta continued. “Everything he did was a form of art. He possessed boundless creativity and consistently aimed to uplift his friends and everyone around him. He created opportunities for individuals like myself and Jerry, and single-handedly put San Jose back on the map. Marc had an extraordinary talent—whether it was on a skateboard, in creating brands, or in developing advertising campaigns. Marc Johnson has departed from us today. He was among the most gifted and imaginative people to ever grace a skateboard, either on or off it.”

“It was less than a month ago that Marc visited San Jose to spend time together,” Barletta stated in his tribute, adding that Johnson was “sober, in good health, and full of vitality.”
“We thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing about our past experiences,” Barletta remarked. “He appeared genuinely enthusiastic about what the future held. He even extended his travel plans by a couple of days to revisit some of his old favorite spots around San Jose. When it was time to take him to the airport, he handed me an envelope. I waited until I returned home to open it. Inside was a three-page document detailing his aspirations and dreams for the future. I could never have envisioned that less than a month later, he would be gone.”
