Charles’ Kin: A Look at the Monarch’s Siblings

The British monarchy boasts many well-known personalities, given their standing as recognizable individuals from the United Kingdom. Over the course of her extensive lifetime, Queen Elizabeth II had four children with her now-deceased spouse, Prince Philip. Her oldest offspring, King Charles III, became the reigning monarch on September 10, 2022, occurring two days following his mother’s passing.

Presented below is an in-depth view of the king’s three siblings, detailed from the eldest to the youngest.

Princess Anne, 75

Charles has only one sister, Princess Anne, who was born on August 15, 1950. Her formal title, according to the royal family’s website, is The Princess Royal. Since 1970, she has held the position of president at Save the Children UK and has a distinguished background in equestrianism. She started serving the public at age 18 and has continued her endeavors far into her 70s. Anne participates in “over 300 charities” both within the UK and on a global scale. This noteworthy woman currently holds the 16th position in the order of succession.

Anne has been married twice in her life, initially to equestrian Mark Phillips, from whom she separated in 1992, and then to Naval officer Timothy Laurence. She wed her current spouse in the same year she separated from Mark. Despite being married to Timothy for over thirty years, they have no shared children. She had her only two offspring, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, with Mark.

Princess Anne played a significant role in King Charles’ coronation ceremony, fulfilling the duty of Colonel of the Blues and Royals in the Household Cavalry regiment as Gold Stick [in waiting]. Anne rode behind the coach of King Charles and Camilla carrying the ceremonial Gold Stick upon their arrival at Westminster Abbey on the day of the coronation.

The next-to-oldest of the late queen’s children is her son, Prince Andrew. Andrew has faced extensive controversy recently, after Virginia Giuffre accused him of sexual assault back in December 2019. His past links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and sex trafficker Ghislane Maxwell further tarnished Andrew’s reputation within the royal circle. Queen Elizabeth II even removed his honorary military roles and royal patronages on January 13, 2022, as a consequence of the issue. In 2025, his royal title was revoked. In 2026, he was taken into custody on suspicion of official misconduct.

Andrew was present at King Charles’ coronation; however, he did not have an official function at the event due to his past.

Prince Andrew was formerly wed to author Sarah, Duchess of York, from the year 1986 until their divorce in 1996. Together, they had two daughters: Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Beatrice entered matrimony with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020, while Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

Last but certainly not least, is Elizabeth and Philip’s son, Prince Edward, who was born on March 10, 1964. On March 10, 2023, King Charles gave his youngest sibling the new title of Duke of Edinburgh, previously belonging to their deceased father. His spouse, Sophie, also was given the title of Duchess of Edinburgh, which was previously held by the departed queen.

“His Majesty The King has shown his pleasure in bestowing the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar, coinciding with His Royal Highness’s 59th birthday,” Buckingham Palace expressed in a formal statement. “The title is to be held by Prince Edward throughout His Royal Highness’s lifetime. The Dukedom was initially created for Prince Philip back in 1947, after he married Princess Elizabeth, who was recognized as the Duchess of Edinburgh ahead of her accession to the throne back in 1952.”

During Edward’s marriage to Sophie, the pair only had one daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, and afterward had a son, James, Viscount Severn.
