I was riding in public transport the other day, admiring the sun, and then I had to listen to someone else's conversation. A twenty-year-old girl was complaining to her friend on the speakerphone that it was almost time for open tops, and she was “not ready.” Thoughts about intermittent fasting for a flat stomach and extra hours in the gym were going around, because her arms looked somehow wrong, Ukr.Media reports.
It would seem that we have already been through this.
About ten years ago, everyone celebrated the victory together when body positivity gave us permission to simply live in our bodies, not be ashamed of cellulite, and reminded us that we are actually people, not cattle at a fair. It was as if we exhaled and realized that vacation is about relaxation, not military discipline in the fight for the right to wear a swimsuit.
But we were happy for a short time.
Weight loss injections entered the scene. With all this hysteria around Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, it became clear: the cult of the perfect body was not going anywhere. It was simply pumping abs in the underground and biding its time. The Instagram feed is once again filled with stories about the sacrifices women make to lose perfectly normal kilograms gained during pregnancy or menopause. Even American professional tennis player Serena Williams admitted that she injected drugs to get back in shape after giving birth.
I can't judge anyone.
When society has been hammering into your head for years that being overweight is almost the worst thing that can happen to you, you'll do anything. Women lose weight not so much for the imaginary prevention of diabetes, but rather to banally avoid fatphobia and devaluation. It's a way to make us take up less space in space. Looking at all this, I want to buy the biggest eclair and eat it right in the middle of the street.
By the way, about the body industry
Did you hear the news that Lycra, the manufacturer of elastane, has filed for bankruptcy? Yes, the same material that has kept our bodies in shape for years. They say they've been outclassed by competitors like Kim Kardashian's Skims. It's funny to watch a brand that was stretched to the limit and then just burst at the seams.
And in general, now is the time for some kind of mass deja vu
American scientists have researched and proven that fashion comes back every twenty years. Seriously, did they need research for this?
It's enough for me to look at the outfits of modern teenagers: baggy jeans, crop tops… I could have provided them with everything they needed from my closet from the early 2000s, if I hadn't thrown those things away in time along with memories of teenage complexes.
But there is also good news about growing up.
Mel B from the Spice Girls recently complained online about menopause. She found almost every possible symptom in herself, and urged everyone to prepare for this horror. But she somehow forgot to mention the best side effect of age: you don't care what other people think of you.
Surveys show that almost 80% of women stop caring about other people's opinions after they turn fifty. In my opinion, this is the only symptom worth celebrating loudly.
And speaking of healthy habits…
While some people are suffering in the gym preparing for races, scientists from Cardiff have published a study that shows that a hot bath improves the endurance of marathon runners. That is, you lie in a foam with lavender, and your performance increases.
Well, if we talk about really cool transformations, then instead of discussing Kelly Osbourne's next weight loss, it's better to look at her brother Jack. He not only stays sober for years, he also helps others get out of addictions (the same Matt Willis from Busted recently thanked him publicly). Jack looks healthy, enjoys life and is raising a newborn daughter. Now, in my opinion, that's a real achievement. And not how we will look in a swimsuit this summer.
